Dear __________________,
So much to tell, so little space: As you probaly know, early last year I retired as a solo artist. At the time, Debbie and I were living in the jungles of Great Britain, pondering the future over our nightly bowl of gruel. Today, in spite of the added burdens of a Honda with 126,000 miles and a new address ending in the words "Nashville, Tennessee" (a swell place, really), be assured the change was strictly vocational. I'm still the same lovable guy.
The new vocation? I'm in a new band called Chagall Guevara with guitarists Dave Perkins and Lynn Nichols, bassist Wade "Stumpy" Jaynes and drummer Mike "The Drummer" Mead. I'm the frontman (whatever that means) and one third of the songwriting team. The sound is decidedly rock, the lyrics rather offbeat, and it's on MCA Records.
Far be it from me to assume that just because you liked my records enough to join the Clone Club, you're going to immediately buy multiple copies of Chagall Guevara's mind-boggling debut. So MCA has agreed to send you a tape of some of our songs absolutely free, just so you can check it out.
I'm hoping that since I've been unable to answer all of the many questions in your many letters since my retirement, this small act of Yuletide cheer will make it up to you. If not, I'm willing to consider anything short of donating vital organs.
Your friend,
Steve Taylor (blood type: o-pos.)
Letter
February 15, 1991
To whom it may concern,
The good people at MCA have asked me to write yet another letter to accompany the tape you now hold in your trembling hand. I know the anticipation you must be feeling right now. It's sort of like getting that first shipment from the Columbia House Record Club, except you don't have to buy nine more records over the next two years.
Not that we wouldn't appreciate a favor or two. Assuming you like what you hear, please follow this simple procedure:
- Buy Chagall Guevara's debut album at your local record shop.
- Tell all your friends to do the same.
- Call your local college, alternative and album rock radio stations and request "Violent Blue."
- Dial MTV. (Hourly would be nice.)
- Come and see us live anytime we're in a 500 mile radius.
Am I asking too much? I don't think so. After all, if you can't exploit your friends...
Your friend,
Steve Taylor
P.S. Any future correspondences will be coming from all of us in the band (Dave, Lynn, Mike, Wade and me). If you'd like to write us directly:
